4.8.2. Exercises

Exercise 4.1

Using a networked computer running Windows NT Workstation or Server, go to Control Panel, Services, and pause the Server service. From another computer on the network, try to access a shared resource on the first computer. Can you access it? Why not? Can you access other computers from the first computer?

Explanation: You will not be able to access any resources located on the first computer from another computer on the network. The Server service is necessary to provide network access. You will still be able to access network resources from the first computer because this ability is provided via the Workstation service.

Exercise 4.2

Open the registry using REGEDT32.EXE. Create a logon message to be displayed whenever anyone logs on to your computer. Enter a value for both LegalNoticeCaption and LegalNoticeText of type REG_SZ.

Explanation: Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\Winlogon, enter the following for the title of your logon message box:

Name: LegalNoticeCaption
Type: REG_SZ
Value: Enter the text you wish displayed

Now enter the value for the logon text message itself as

Name: LegalNoticeText
Type: REG_SZ
Value: Enter the text of the message to be displayed

Exercise 4.3

Use Server Manager to configure your computer to send you alerts. Be sure to use the Services applet to verify that both the Alerter and Messenger services are started.

Explanation: Under Server Manager, select the computer you want to generate the alert messages by double-clicking it. Then select the Alerts button and enter the destination for the alert. If either the Alerter service or the Messenger service is not running, alert messages will not be sent.

Exercise 4.4

Use the registry editor of your choice to configure autologon on your computer. HINT: Be sure to enter domain name, username, and password for this to work.

Explanation: Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\Winlogon, enter the following for the title of your logon message box:

Name: AutoAdminLogon
Type: REG_SZ
Value: 1
Name: DefaultDomainName
Type: REG_SZ
Value: Enter the name of your domain
Name: DefaultUserName
Type: REG_SZ
Value: Enter the name of the user to be logged on
Name: DefaultPassword
Type: REG_SZ
Value: Enter the password of the user to be logged on
